Malakal: children and war

“As I mentioned to you on the phone, I am
sending two pictures about the life of children at the camp. There is practically
no school and getting enough food for the families is becoming difficult. The children
themselves then look for casual jobs. I took the picture this morning: I was
smiling at the scene but also sad because these children are unjustly deprived
of many of their rights.
The other picture shows what is in the imaginary of the children as it is shown
by the toys that they make. They are very skilful at that, and mud and small
sticks are materials easily found. After the bombing of Malakal town by a
gunship last May, the idea of a military helicopter is now clear, while before
they were used to see only the UN passenger helicopters.”
