Karamoja is considered as “hard to reach area” in northeastern Uganda. The overall literacy rate of this region stands at 25% and 70% of the population mostly girls has never been to school. Therefore, the Comboni Missionary Sisters ministry in Matany School of Nursing and Midwifery in Karamoja is giving priority to Karimojong girls admitting 75% and only 25% for boys within the total student population.
One of the student midwife who have managed to escape from arranged marriage by her parents for dowry said “ I am grateful to be listed as one of the beneficiary from the school’s scholarship, to be train and become a competent midwife in the future from one of the best three performing Heath Training Institute in Uganda and to get away from an early marriage.”
After the qualification of Karimojong students, they become protagonist in their own region by working in the hospital, teaching staff at the school or working in health centers in the neighboring districts. It’s an important aspect since the staffing level of health workers in Karamoja is currently low about 48% only.
