Growing up as a young student in a Catholic school, I was taught to follow strict rules and etiquette. From standing up when a teacher or sister entered the classroom to praying every morning, putting God first was a priority. Through moral classes, I learned how to speak and express myself with confidence and respect. I was also taught the importance of modesty, respecting others through my words and actions, and punctuality. Despite our religious differences, we were all family, and cultural diversity and unity were highly valued.
This nurturing community not only taught me academic subjects but also helped me become a better person.
Learning Respect from a Young Age
As a young student in a Catholic school, I was initially apprehensive about the strict rules that were imposed on us. But over time, I began to appreciate the value of following these rules and the positive impact they had on my life.
Prioritizing God in Our Daily Lives
I remember standing up every time our teacher or the sister entered the classroom, a small but significant way of showing respect from a young age. We were also taught to pray every morning, to start our day with a conversation with God. Putting God first was a priority, regardless of whether we were Christian or Muslim.
Developing Confidence and Respect Through Moral Classes
I also recall our weekly moral classes, where we learned how to speak and express ourselves confidently and respectfully. These lessons helped us to strengthen our relationships with others and to navigate the complexities of life with grace and dignity.
Finding Beauty in Modesty
One of the most significant rules that was enforced was the requirement to cover our legs with white tall socks. We were taught that there is beauty in covering our bodies, which God had blessed us with, and that doing so was a sign of respect and honor. We were also instructed to speak with a low voice and to address older people with respect, using phrases like “May I?” and “Please?” and “حضرتك.”
Respecting Others Through Our Words and Actions
Our nails had to be short and free of any colors, not just at school but everywhere. We were also expected to adhere to strict time schedules, with the school doors closing at a specific time. This emphasis on punctuality and discipline taught us the importance of respecting our commitments and being accountable for our actions.
Embracing Cultural Diversity and Unity
Despite being from different religions, we were all treated like family. I remember fasting with my Christian friends during “الصيام الكبير,” and they fasted with me during “رمضان.” The strict rules and punishments might have been bothersome at times, but they instilled in us a sense of respect and manners that have stayed with us throughout our lives.
Nurtured by a Community That Values Personal Growth
Even today, I find myself drawn back to the school and the community of teachers and sisters who nurtured us. They welcomed us with open arms and warm smiles, even long after we had left their care. It wasn’t just about learning academic subjects but about being raised to become someone great, someone who values peace, respect, and unity in a world that desperately needs them.
