On 28 February 2023 the Ethiopian Ministry of Education awarded the best performing students and schools in the 2022 Ethiopia Secondary School Leaving Examination which took place last November 2022. Due to changes in the educational policy of the Country, the 2022 national exams turned up to be quite challenging for most of the students who sat for the examination. As a matter of fact only 3.3% of the students at the level of the whole Country (about 29,000 out of almost 900 thousand) were able to score the minimum required to join university which is 50%.
Of those who passed, 273 were recognized for their outstanding performance by the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Dr. Abiy Ahmed and the Minister of Education, Professor Birhanu Nega in an awarding ceremony which took place in the new established Museum of Science in Addis Abeba. Addressing the students, Dr. Abiy Ahmed urged them to focus on their dreams and study hard, reminding them to hold their country closer to their heart. He called on every student to seek wisdom and work to change the country, especially a student who stands for the truth will change the country tomorrow. He further called on the students to emulate the best Ethiopian scholars from the past by building national devotion and passion. All 273 top scorers received a laptop and full free scholarships to purse university studies in the Arab Emirates.
Among the outstanding students, five were from Comboni Senior Secondary School which belongs to the Apostolic Vicariate of Hawassa and it is run since its foundation in 1991 by the Comboni Missionary Sisters. Moreover, during the above mentioned ceremony, 20 high-performing schools were also recognized and among them Comboni Senior Secondary School. Sr. Lucia Disconsi, Comboni Sister, the current school principal, received the award in the name of the whole school community. The award stands as a proof of the dedication of students, school staff, parents and the church community to improve the quality of education in Ethiopia. St. D. Comboni surely is proud of this accomplishment. Best wishes to the 2022 graduates.
