The Comboni Missionary Sisters of South Sudan have been dreaming this day for more than 10 years, and on August 18, 2023, their new Provincial House in Juba has been finally inaugurated.
The celebration was graced by the presence of the Archbishop of Juba, Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla, of Monsignor Paul Ionut, Chargé affairs of the Apostolic Nunciature in Juba, and of many representatives of the Catholic Church in South Sudan and beyond. Fr. Cristiano Bettega had come all the way from the Archdiocese of Trent, in Italy, which has greatly contributed to meet the construction costs.
Many lay friends of the Comboni sisters were also present to partake in their joy, while the constructor, Robert Andama, with his workforce of over 100 men has been actively involved in the logistics of the celebration, which started at 4.30 with a simple prayer.
The Gospel of Matthew (Mt 7, 21.24-25) reminds that a solid house must be built on Christ “the rock”, and the speeches echoed that passage with words of encouragement and appreciation to the Comboni sisters, who have been a presence of blessings in South Sudan for more than 100 years.
Sr. Maria Martinelli, Provincial Superior, underlined that the construction of this new house, which has overcome so many hindrances, also becomes a promise: God helps the Comboni Sisters remain in this “sacred land” of suffering and hope to continue journeying with its people.
On the occasion, sr. Margareth Wanja Wamaru, incoming Provincial Superior, was also introduced.
After cutting the ribbon and escorting the main guests in a brief tour of the news house, a lavish supper was served and crowned by a special caked with the shape of the new house.
When God provides vision and endurance, dreams do come true and strengthen others to keep their own dreams alive: dreams of peace and prosperity.
